This (mostly) black-and-white volume goes back in time to bring us the backstories of Xykon the Lich, his goblin priest lackey Redcloak, and the Creature in Darkness. Now, this kind of thing can be a mistake. For instance, I never WANTED to know why Darth Vader became evil. I just accepted that he was, and so I had no interest in an entire prequel trilogy showing how he ended up that way. Often, trying to explain why the bad guys became so bad just demystifies them. But in this case, the character histories that we witness here dramatically revise what we thought we knew, and now I'm more than half convinced that it is Redcloak, and not Roy or his buddies in the Order of the Stick, who is the real hero of the story. I won't give anything away, but now that we see his goals and motivations, I find his role much more interesting than that of practically anyone else. Xykon, of course, is still just a psycho, but a self-aware (if unapologetic) one, and he has a fascinating scene toward the end in which he explains just how and where he and Redcloak differ. Shame on you if you haven't been following this tale through its online version or the four collections, but it's not too late to hop onboard, and I highly encourage you to do so.
This takes the story in the order of the stick to a whole new level. While the normal gaming, slapstick, and general geek humor is there what makes this product really shine is the depth it gives the characters. In no novel, comic, gaming supplement have i ever seen a better reasoning behind a villain's motive for being the threat to all thats good and holy the story requires them to be. This should be required reading for any GM who wants to be able to do 'intelligent evil' with greater depth than the normal inflatable pool level treatment bad guys usually get. Unlike Origin of PC's this isn't more of the same. its a cut, slash, and great cleave above the rest.
Before Volume 1 and even before Volume 0, there was THIS Volume. The Volume that tells us about Redcloak, the Creature in the Darkness, Xykon, not to be confused with Zykon or Xyklon, and even the history behind the Crimson Mantle and why all this guys are looking for the Gates in the first place. With a preface by Miko Miyazaki and lots of humor, murders, Ninja clowns, tacos, lies, zombies and all the evil characters you could ever want, this is a must for any library!
With excellent jokes and storytelling, plus subtle and not-so-subtle visual humor, this is an excellent read. Though not vital knowledge for anyone reading the online strip, I've started to notice a few references to the back story creeping into the current dialog. There is one drawback to this novel, and Mr. Burlew even mentions it in the preface. Sometimes the story gets pretty dark. And I'm not talking about gallows humor dark but actual depressing dark. These guys turn evil for a reason, and it's not that much fun to discover why. Xykon, that lovably two-dimensional parody of evil, takes on depths of depravity that turn him into someone you truly hate.
Start of Darkness is a prequel story featuring the villains of the Order of the Stick webcomic. It is the second 'print-only' OotS book, featuring material not available on the website. As with the other print-only collections, this trade is in greyscale due to cost concerns (except for a 9 page section in the middle). Start of Darkness is 112 pages long, and features background on Xykon and Redcloak. It's got light touches of humor, but is mostly a dark tale, as befits the embodiments of evil plaguing our heroes. Without going into spoilers, there is a TON of information here that gives great insight into the characters and their motivations. Although I recommend reading all of the OotS books, I found On the Origin of PCs (Start of Darkness's hero analog) enjoyable but not strictly necessary. In contrast, while like with Origin there's nothing here vital to understanding the main story, there is great depth added to our villains here (particularly Redcloak) that shouldn't be missed. A fantastic side story to the central quest, Start of Darkness really is a must read if you're following the main trades. While the volume number -1 is appropriate from a 'in-comic' time perspective, it doesn't tell you when you should be reading this volume. As the author states in the introduction it can be read after Volume 2 without spoiling anything, but I'd recommend reading it between Volumes 3 and 4 (along with Origin, if you choose).
This is probably the best hook focusing on the villains that I have ever seen. It is funny at times, but it can also be intense, dark, and sometimes sad. Definitely worth getting.
How did Xykon become a Lich? Why is redcloak so.. redcloaky? And what's up with the Paladins anyways? If you're a fan of OOTS, this book is terrific. It's an in-depth backstory about the origin of Xykon and Redcloak, and answers a lot of questions while simultaneously being extremely entertaining. No shortage of macabre humor from Xykon, or snark from Redcloak. (The 'history of the goblins' section done in crayon was an especially nice touch) That's really all I can say about it. It's not SUPER long (I read the whole thing in a night), but definitely worth buying.
I found the book to be excellent. The backstory of the villians enhanced their compelling nature and as a stand alone story story it worked very well. It also created a very interesting mythology that blends well with the online comic. Finally, showing just the type of person Redcloak is in a way that makes you feel sorry for the path he has taken without making him someone you would feel sorry for. It is an incrediblely difficult balance that is done very well.
This is a great story. Oftentimes prequels are lame because of Foregone Conclusion and Plot Armor but this one is fascinating because one can see the underpinnings of the villain's Evil Plan and the world itself. Don't read this to see the ending because if wanted to you buy this then you would already know the ending. Read this to see how that ending came to be. As in the main comic, there's lots of comedy of many kinds; fourth wall comedy, black comedy, and general one-liners, etc. However, this is by no means a comedic work. The villains are the stars here so there's a lot of pain and drama to go around, yet none of it is excessive. It's all in the name of the story and its plot and conflict. Nor does the great deal of darkness mean there is no light. There's one scene in particular that is astonishingly bright given the events round it and there's a glimmer of peaceful alternative to Redcloak's divine mission. This book shows a new perspective on Redcloak. After reading this, it's hard to see him as either a hero or a villain. The start of the book shows his village slaughtered by foreign warriors which leads to him taking up his master's mantle (literally in this case) to fulfill a mission from his god to save his people. Without any other context, that sentence sounds like a heroic premise but Redcloak is a villain in the main narrative because he's doing the same thing. On one hand he's doing all this evil stuff but on the other hand his people have been dealt a raw deal by fate (again, literally) but on a third hand, his village was wiped out because of all the evil stuff his master was doing to fulfill the same plan that is supposed to alleviate this kind of stuff. It's a complicated morality. Xykon, in contrast, is eviler than ever, if for no other reason than he has more screen time. He starts out evil and becomes progressively eviler as the comic goes on. By the end, he's outright diabolic! By no means is this book required to enjoy the main comic but I believe fellow fans will appreciate the extra information.

Wow! Just wow! For those who are aware with the history presented at the webcomic, this is a fantastic material to know what is REALLY happening. Almost a must-have to fully understand the plot.
If you like the comic you should buy this. If you somehow ended up here without having ever read the comic, you may as well check out the strip online first (this book is all new content, but the bulk of the comic is available free online). This is by far the best of the OOTS books, and something that any fan should read. While I'm not sure the main story books are worth the the money, this is all new content, and story-wise is as good as anything in the comic. The book focuses on the origin of Xykon, Redcloak, and the MITD, but Redcloak is the real star, and the book reveals a lot about him that hasn't been shown in the online comic, or which has only been hinted at. Like all the OOTS books, this one also features insightful commentary from the author. Like the previous prequel book, this one is in gray scale (though it does have a full color flashback sequence), which in some ways is disappointing, but while reading the book, I really didn't notice after a few pages. Regardless, if you read the comic, this is the book you need to buy.
Does a fairly decent job of covering the origins of the villains of the webcomic Order of the Stick. Eminem songs free download mp3 skull download. An enjoyable read.
I ordered this for my boyfriend, and he loves it. :)

This is a great addition to the OOTS chronicles. I do wish Rich had been less playful with the volume designations: I ordered this thinking that I was getting Vol. 1, assuming that the '-' was just a stray mark inserted for some unknown reason. But although I definitely did not intend to order Vol NEGATIVE 1, I very much enjoyed it - and would have eventually ordered it once I realized the series has both Vol. 1 and Vol. -1. Double-check before you order this, if Vol. 1 is your goal!

They do the darkness in this one. And like it that way. So -- a little less for the tender or sensitive.
